The Dog in the Night

To start with, we were obliged to purchase some dubious cold cuts from a store quite a distance away, for Ma’s work. As the case was, we got garlic roast beast slices. When we got home, they went in the refrigerator and were forgot about until the next morning when we were at once powerfully reminded of the purchase as we got cream for coffee.

Once again they were ignored until the evening when even an impartial observer would have had to admit that something was not right in the refrigerator. Realizing that the cold was mitigating the situation, we were reluctant to put the offending slices in the trash or the compost, and for a moment we were puzzled. Then Ma noticed the neighbor’s dog, and the problem was solved.

The next morning I remarked that I had been woke up in the middle of the night by a dog barking, “Why was the dog out at 4 in the morning?” Then we remembered.
