Once again they were ignored until the evening when even an impartial observer would have had to admit that something was not right in the refrigerator. Realizing that the cold was mitigating the situation, we were reluctant to put the offending slices in the trash or the compost, and for a moment we were puzzled. Then Ma noticed the neighbor’s dog, and the problem was solved.
The next morning I remarked that I had been woke up in the middle of the night by a dog barking, “Why was the dog out at 4 in the morning?” Then we remembered.
