High Holy Days question

So I'm on the bus to work today and I noticed that the synagogue has a big black awning covering the entrance. Is this part of the holiday, or are the Jews very sensitive to light this time of year?

Dunno what that's about...maybe a form of advertising: "getcher pentience here! Getcher red, hot penitence!"

Actually, my guess is that they simply got themselves a new awning, and decided to put it up for the new year, and that it otherwise has nada to do with the Days of Awe. The traditional color for Yom Kippur is white.
