East Thetford Bank Standoff Ends Peacefully

EAST THETFORD, Vt. -- A two-hour hostage stand-off involving an apparent bank robber and two bank employees ended peacefully Wednesday afternoon in East Thetford.
Vermont State Police said the gunman has been taken into custody, and the hostages have been released.
The man apparently was trying to rob the Merchants Bank when he took the workers hostage and kept
police at bay.

Teams of State Police troopers and state highway crews set up roadblocks on state highways nearly a mile from the village, blocking reporters and photographers near Interstate 91.
U.S. Route 5 was closed, and so were bridges across the Connecticut River from New Hampshire.
Public Safety Commissioner Kerry Sleeper said the stand-off began about noon.
